Our First Aussie

Looking back at a year ago a little chicken-fluffed blue merle Australian Shepherd came off of a plane from Colorado and changed our lives forever.

My partner and I are in love. We have been for 3 years now. A year ago we decided that we needed to add a member to the family. Of course, with being in school and working we knew children wouldn't be in the picture for quite some time. So of course every great family needs a great dog - so we began the search.

It was puppy fever - big time. I know many of our readers will understand the heart fluttering force known as puppy fever. You spend too many late nights on the internet Googling dog breeds and surfing puppyfind.com, petfinder.com and even Craigslist. Yes, it was that bad.

Through our search, we came across Sailen' Acres - a breeder of champion show and herding Australian Shepherds. Suddenly, there he was. A blue merle pup, about 5 weeks old, marbled eyes, white points, and copper trim. He wasn't spoken for. We knew at that moment he was ours. Waiting for him to come home was painstaking. We made all the preperations - drooling over baby dog toys, collars, beds, and  what food to start the pup on. Our name list was a mile long but as soon as he came out of his crate from the airplane we knew he was our Aero.

At the time, my partner was working at a national brand pet store so we had a trainer lined up, a groomer lined up, but we were undecided on our food choice. It wasn't long after our trainer told us about a raw feeding store in the Houston area we found ourselves learning about a Raw diet from Jes (who would soon become our very best friend and next door neighbor). Jes taught us all about raw and how great it had worked on her dogs. She also told us she was involved in search and recovery (along with her dog Tempie). We wanted the best for our little bundle of puppy breath and we decided that Raw was worth a try.

Let me tell you - we will never look back again.

My partner met with the owner and soon began working at the Raw pet food store and eventually we won over the friendship affections of the surly yet sweet Jes who managed the place. I work there too, part time, in the processing side of things.

This is a blog about our little family. It's a little raw (in feeding and truth) but we are very happy to share it with you as we embark on the expansion of our family: the adition of a little red merle girl in just a few weeks.
