First Day at Work

So Indie had been eating Science Diet Puppy formula. We decided to get her used to richer protein by switching her to Merrick Puppy Plate before moving to raw. The Science Diet was just not cutting it for me.

Here are the first 5 ingredients in the Science Diet Puppy formula:
Whole Grain Corn
Chicken By-Product Meal
Corn Gluten Meal
Animal fat
Dried Beet Pulp

Compare that to the Merrick Puppy Plate:
Chicken
Turkey Meal
Chicken Meal
Ground Rice
Oat Meal

The primary source of protein in Merrick Puppy Plate is Chicken. The percentage of moisture in Merrick Puppy Plate is 10%, which is drastically less than the average for all Dry Dog Food. I won't feed her this forever because there is still too much grain, but it is a step up from the Science Diet.

Little Girrr went to work Tuesday for the first time! This was during a potty break.

Welcome Home Indie

Our little girl made it home last night. She is even cuter than her photos in person! She's 8 weeks and has green and blue eyes. We decided to name her Indie. She slept all through the night without a peep and she has been going to the bathroom outside like a good girl. Best of all - Aero LOVES her!

A New Life

Since before we got Aero we have always been serious when looking at breeders. Slash V Australian Shepherds had always been at the top of our list. We had inquired about their pups several times but were always told there was a long waiting list. So, we found Aero's breeders - Sailen' Acres - and we were very very happy with that match. We would always keep up with the Slash V news, but we always laughed saying getting a spot on that waiting list would have to wait til some unknown date in the future.

I had, out of the blue, emailed Terry Martin of Slash V when we decided to look for a new pup. I heard back pretty quickly:

Hi Rachel,

I think I had told you that I had bred Whicket to Tide and she did have puppies last Friday. I have not notified the people on my reservation list yet as I usually wait until the puppies are about a week old to be sure they are all thriving - which so far they definitely are.  She has four females, two red merles and two black bi's.

So we were a little downhearted. It was a couple days later when something amazing happened.

Let me ask you this: do you believe in fate?

I'm not sure if fate exactly exists, but I do know that  times the right energies line up at the right time. Well, our new pup happened to fall under that category of extrordinary.

Hi Rachel,
I think I notified you that both of my red merle females were sold.  I just got an e-mail from one of my puppy buyers and her husband (who the puppy was supposed to be a gift for) has decided he does not want a puppy now.  So I do have one of the red merle females available if you are interested.  Below are a couple of pictures I took a day or two ago.  Just let me know and if you aren't interested I will notify some other folks who asked after you did.

Thanks
Terry

We completely were able to by-pass the waiting list AND get first pick of the litter!

We chose this gorgeous little girl. Here she is 1 week old. I can't wait to see her grow.

Our First Aussie

Looking back at a year ago a little chicken-fluffed blue merle Australian Shepherd came off of a plane from Colorado and changed our lives forever.

My partner and I are in love. We have been for 3 years now. A year ago we decided that we needed to add a member to the family. Of course, with being in school and working we knew children wouldn't be in the picture for quite some time. So of course every great family needs a great dog - so we began the search.

It was puppy fever - big time. I know many of our readers will understand the heart fluttering force known as puppy fever. You spend too many late nights on the internet Googling dog breeds and surfing puppyfind.com, petfinder.com and even Craigslist. Yes, it was that bad.

Through our search, we came across Sailen' Acres - a breeder of champion show and herding Australian Shepherds. Suddenly, there he was. A blue merle pup, about 5 weeks old, marbled eyes, white points, and copper trim. He wasn't spoken for. We knew at that moment he was ours. Waiting for him to come home was painstaking. We made all the preperations - drooling over baby dog toys, collars, beds, and  what food to start the pup on. Our name list was a mile long but as soon as he came out of his crate from the airplane we knew he was our Aero.

At the time, my partner was working at a national brand pet store so we had a trainer lined up, a groomer lined up, but we were undecided on our food choice. It wasn't long after our trainer told us about a raw feeding store in the Houston area we found ourselves learning about a Raw diet from Jes (who would soon become our very best friend and next door neighbor). Jes taught us all about raw and how great it had worked on her dogs. She also told us she was involved in search and recovery (along with her dog Tempie). We wanted the best for our little bundle of puppy breath and we decided that Raw was worth a try.

Let me tell you - we will never look back again.

My partner met with the owner and soon began working at the Raw pet food store and eventually we won over the friendship affections of the surly yet sweet Jes who managed the place. I work there too, part time, in the processing side of things.

This is a blog about our little family. It's a little raw (in feeding and truth) but we are very happy to share it with you as we embark on the expansion of our family: the adition of a little red merle girl in just a few weeks.
